What is a Test Like?

All CLEP tests are multiple choice. Isn't that comforting? Here is an example of a typical question on the American Literature CLEP:

Who is the narrator of The Great Gatsby?
A: Nick Carraway
B: Daisy Buchanan
C: F. Scott Fitzgerald
D: Jay Gatsby
E: Dean Moriarty

And here's one from the Natural Sciences CLEP:

What kind of biological compound prevents materials from moving across the cell membrane?
A: carbohydrates
B: ribosomes
C: nucleic acids
D: internal proteins
E: lipid

According to the College Board, there are five CLEP exams with essay sections:
Be careful: check with your college and see if the essay portion is required for credit!

CLEP tests are roughly 90 minutes in length, with about 100-120 questions each, depending
on the test.

As far as I know, all CLEPs can now be taken on computer (they are referred to as CBTs: Computer Based Tests). This makes everything so easy! You just sit down at the computer, shove in your ear plugs, and start to work.

Here are the steps you'll have to go through:

  1. Enter in your social security #, mailing address, phone number, credit card information, etc., to pay the $75 fee.
  2. Go through several hilarious screens teaching you "How to Use a Mouse" and "How to Use a Keyboard". If it's your first test you might want to breeze through the "How to Answer Questions" section, but it's pretty self-explanatory (this portion of the test is not timed).
  3. Agree to terms and conditions (I won't share information about this test with others or cheat, etc.).
  4. Finally you get to answer a few warm-up questions (What is your gender? Ethnic background?), and it's on to the actual test.

*I took these tests and wasn't even given the option by the testing center to write an essay, but things might have changed since then. The only essay I've written so far was for English Composition with Essay, which is no longer given by the CLEP board as of July 1, 2010.
